Ridgway Advance...Advance!

News >>

100 super soft, free skinned, low SD'd merinos, exactly the tools we need to address the mulesing saga, blew us all away and the event became the second highest on property average in the state for 2008

Advanced merinos are certainly not typical of the majority of SA studs but represent new era breeding erupting more so than most other of those Classic Ram Sale Stud supporters.

A top of $7500 shared between White River and Uardry bought on the onset
of many NSW and Victorian purchases which certainly bled into the Classic sale several months later. The ever present Walladale 2 weaved the magic as a top sire of this ram plus many others throughout the sale. Uardry also grabbed lot 1 by L123. Paul & Felicity Brady Stavely Park snapped up a ripper at lot 17 for $7200. Colin Zanker Laura bought four at an average of $3175.

The first ten rams averaged $3165 with six going to studs from NSW and SA including two to Orrie Cowie.

I grabbed a handful for Jeremy McClure - Netallie Station which despite the sales hefty average, I was able to secure well within budget. That was the order of the day where a lot of clients and new faces were able to buy what they required in the fact that there were so many rams to choose from including an extra 60+ in the mini auction.

Heathdale -Naracoorte bought a swag and weren't frightened to pay for quality.

Classic '08 sale report

After an exceptional on property sale which averaged $2100 for 100 auction rams, second highest in South Australia only to Leahcim (who only sells rams at home), the Ridgway Advance Polls were always going to impress and sell well. Showings at the Mallee and South East Feild Days ensured success with huge depths of quality and many old and new admires alike fully supportive of the stud's desires and strategies.

Lot 1, RA 199, reflected the above sentiment selling after a swift bidding frenzy to $12,000 to a syndicat of SA stud breeders - Roemahkita-Cummins, Calcookara-Cowell and Pepperwell-Keyneton. This ram always took my eye right from earlyin the piece as a weaner and subsequently as a hogget. He was nicknamed Billy's Choice and was bred from a favourite sire which is frequently mentioned WD 2. The ram weighed 122kg, was pur white and SD'd at 2.9u. His fleece which was on display at the 2009 Burra Field day needs to be sitting on our Laboratory bench for all to see!

A surprise purchase was made by Duxson's-Glendemar who purchased RA 133 for $6500 with an SD of 2.5, 18.7u and 0.2 fibres >30u. Stuart Everett, lone Gum grabbed one of the best figured polls in the sale at a bargain price of $3500. The RA 165 (which Calcookara purchased for $10,00 three years ago at Classic 06) bred son had figures of 2.4sd, 12.8 cv at 18.8.

The Ridgway Advance Horns sold well at an average of $2045 for eleven but with the exactly the same quality and breeding as the polls but featured with horns, this alone influenced growers to pay more than half Less than the polls with their $5300 average. Top price went to Erningtons-Wentworth at $4750.
Obviously still a great result but the poll/horn price difference I found astounding.
