RIDGWAY ADVANCE DRAW BUYERS FROM FIVE STATES

News >>

A Huge geographical spread of buyers from WA to Qld ensured Ridgway Advance Poll Merino stud's annual on-property ram sale at Senior was a big success, on Wednesday 14th of August, with a 95 per cent clearance and very credible $2292 average.

Within 10 minutes of the end of the sale all the passed in lots were sold and two buyers moved to the yards to fill their orders resulting in 26 more rams being sold.

There was plenty of action on AuctionsPlus, with Nutrien Naracoortes Nick Heffernan putting in 160 bids for nine active bidders from as far afield as Qld and Tamworth, NSW. Online bidders securred 23 lots.

The sale, north of Bordertown kicked off strongly with plenty of interest in David, Karen and Devon Ridgway's front row rams, especially lot 5 - an ET bred ram

Nutrein auctioneer Gordon Wood described the April 2023-drop as "one of the best wools he had ever seen at the stud's sales, with its dense fleece, alignment of fibre and crimp definition.

TD & KC Voigt, Yorktown, who have bought a couple of rams for their commercial self-replacing Merino flock in the past decade from Ridgway Advance, were the successful buyers of the 17.4 micron ram RA1476 at the $9,000 top price.

They were drawn to the 116-kilogram ram for its clean fleec weight ASBV- in the top 10pc at 31.2. It was also in the top 10pc for fibre diameter at -2.5.

"We have a specific wool type that we like to follow which is a traditional staple and tight knit crimp, that ram had every box that we were ticking" Karina Voigt said.

The sale-topper also had a tremendous eye muscle depth of 46.5, as well as great wool tests including a standard deviation of 2.8 and comfort factor of 99.9pc.

Stud Principle David Ridgway was pleased with the sale result and said the growing number of interstate studs using their genetics, as well as the promotion AuctiosPlus was giving, had put their Ridgway Advance sheep in front of more people. "We knew we had a lot of new interest and a lot of our regular buyers still needed numbers of rams, but we're doing it a bit hard (season wise) so its good to have a spread of buyers including some in northern NSW, whose season is the complete opposite to ours." he said.

David Ridgway said their hard work using proven genetics was paying off with a very even line-up. "When I was following along the sale and opening up the wools, there was not a lot of difference from sheep to sheep and the body weights and figures were all quite close too." he said.

Mr Wood and fellow Nutrien Auctioneer Richard Miller said the consistency all the way through the catalogue was the best they had seen and the result was testament to David and Devon's breeding program.

"There are a lot of buyers here for the whole Ridgway Advance package, but as part of that they get non-mulesed sheep, they get leading ASBV's, they get consistent sire groups and the wools are bold crimpimg, snappy white wools" Mr Miller said

Mr Wood said they boast about "having Perfectly Balanced Poll Merinos" and that is what is drwaing buyers to the stud.

"These guys didnt have ASBV's up until a few years ago, but the linkage in the pedigrees they already had were always going to give them a lift and that what we are seeing - there is a lot of really positive eye muscle and fat, high yielding clean fleece weight, good growth and staple length' he said.
